Running from a hurricane in a fiver

We live on the Texas coast, and my be needing to go inland next week due to Gustav. We will be going inland about 220 miles, but may still get winds up to 60 - 70 mph.
Have any of you stayed in your R/V during storms with high winds? And, if so, how high of winds is worth the risk? Also, do you leave the slides out, or put them in?
There's several of us R/Vers here at the plant that are looking forward to your answers and experience.
Thanks in advance......Skip

Pull Rite Slider hitch owners....Help!!

Getting ready to head to Mississippi for a family reunion this weekend. I'll be hooking up tomorrow night to put the rig in our driveway so the DW can load.
I noticed some back and forward movement on the hitch when I loaded it. PullRite's procedure is to back off the locknut of the adjusting capscrew (for the nylon block), hand tighten the capscrew, then tighten an additional 1/2 turn, and then retighten the lock nut. This simple task requires two wrenches.
Is there a special wrench to aid with these steps? There's not much room to get to the lock nut, and tighten it while holding the adjusting capscrew in place, as it's inside of the hitches frame work.
Any help from you wealth of information group will be much appreciated.
Thanks,

Your favorite camp ground

O.K. guys. We've been doing the rv thing a little less than a year now, and there's so many places we'd like to visit. But, we still have a few more years working before we can really get out there and travel.
Please tell us your favorite camp ground/rv park and why. We would like to take advantage of you more experienced campers.
Thanks and Happy Camping!!

Bike ladder rack...yes or no?

The DW wants to get a couple of aluminum frame mountain bikes. I have installed some stabilizers on our 5er so mounting a reciever hitch will be somewhat of a pain. Anyone out there in RV land had any experience with the ladder racks, and if so, please list pros and cons.

Sunny Glen Resort

Anyone out there camped (rv site) at this resort located on Cedar Creek Lake just outside of Malakoff, Texas? If so, please comment as to your experience. We're thinking of staying there in August.
I've checked on the RV.net forums, but found nothing.

RE: 1/2 TON TV for 5th Wheels, any 5Wtrailers light enough...

I see where KZ is offering a 5er in their Spree line. Used to be just trailers. The one I saw looked to about 28' long, and the weight was only 6,353 lbs.

O.K......I gotta ask...Do you use the Bounce sheets right out of the box, or after they've been used in the dryer?

RE: Titan towing capacity

I see that KZ is now offering their Spree models in a fifth wheeler. The one I saw shows a weight of 6353 lbs, and appeared to be about 28' long. We have their 35' Durango, and believe they (KZ) builds a pretty solid unit IMO.
Good Luck.....Happy Camping!!!

RE: Park Review - Petit Jean SP, Arkansas (pics included)

We were at Lake Dardanelle last Sept. We visited Petit Jean, and I seem to remember the road there being quite steep. We have a 35' fiver. What's the best route to take?
We're looking to go back this Sept. BTW the photos are great!
Thanks......

RE: Running from a hurricane with the 5er

Thanks to all. Good advice. I know the secret is to leave early, but my wife's employer wouldn't let them leave as early as mine( a day later). I figure she may have to use some sick leave if it ever happens again.
I'm still curious if anyone has been asked to open up their rig for potty, water, food etc, in an emergency situation.
Not during a hurricane, but once we were stranded on the west bound lane of Bay Bridge, in Louisiana, because of an accident for seven hours. It would have been nice to have had our 5er back then. But, do you open it up to everyone? I try to help out when I can, but my trust level has diminished somewhat the older I get.
You guys are great!!
Happy camping!!!

RE: Ice Maker

We have the Edgestar as well. I'm using it right now to bag ice for the freezer at home. It has three size settings for ice cubes, a timer, and a setting for self cleaning. We've had it for about eight months now, and claims to produce 38 pounds of ice daily, but I haven't proven that yet. It works well, but it cost me about $210.00, and weighs about 40 lbs. I bought it on line, and it was shipped free to me. You can get cheaper ones, but I still believe you get what you pay for......most of the time.

Running from a hurricane with the 5er

I was discussing with the DW about escaping the next hurricane with our rig. We ran from Rita in 2005, before we had a 5er. It was pretty scarey. It took us 12 hours to go from League City to Conroe (Texas), which is normally a one hour drive.
The interstate was like a war zone. It was like some futuristic movie. People using roadway bushes for bathrooms, dumping trash, fighting, broke down needing water and/or gas. It was like there was no laws. I even traveled with my gun in my lap, expecting trouble at any time. People unprepared in emergency situations will do some weird things.
I'm sure if we had be pulling the rig, there would have neen mothers with children wanting inside for water, bathroom, food, etc. While wanting to help, I believe we would be opening ourselves up to trying to take care of more than we could handle.
I'm thinking of parking our 5er at our favorite park three hours north, during August and Sept. It's $275.00 per month (with utilities). Although I would still be paying storage back home for an empty barn, this might be the best way to go.
Any of you guys had any experience with this type of situation? This will be our first hurricane season with the rig.
Thanks.....Skip

Help.....Rubber roof cleaning

We have a 2008 KZ Durango. I clean it after every use, and the last time was a couple of weeks back. I use a product called Totally Awesome.
When I was on top of the rig's rubber roof, there seemed to be a light film of gray to black material, almost like a dust. The cleaner didn't come close to removing it, but I noticed when I would pivot, the dirt/dust would disappear where my shoes made contact. I don't worry too much about this, as we keep it stored inside a metal building.
Question: Have any of you guys seen this type of dirt, and if so, what product do you use to clean it with? We've only been at this for ten months, and have some learning to do.
Thanks for any info.

RE: Fifth Wheel Stablizers

We have some friends that have an identical 5er like ours. He told me that he would actually get 'sea sick' while reading a book, as his wife cooked meals, moving back and forth in the kitchen. He would go outside and sit at the picnic table to read. We let them walk around in ours after I installed the JT's, and they ordered them right away. I helped him install their's as well.
Trust me and others on this board....It's the best option you can buy for your rig....hands down.

RE: Superglide Questions

We have the 16K for our Chevy HD 2500. The newer models do have deeper beds. Superglide offers pins that are one inch longer that the super rails sit on. I don't know if there's any longer or not.
Good Luck

RE: Texas Destination

We stayed at the KOA just outside of Fredericksburg for several days during the Christmas week, and loved it. They really keep the place up, and the folks that run the place are great to deal with. And, of course, the DW loved all the shops near by.
Good Luck.....Skip
